Woo hoo!
On Wednesday night, we are starting a new message and small group series entitled “Taking Responsibility for Your Life”
I can’t wait to discuss what this means in each of our lives!
August 10, 2010

So this past week, we started a brand new series at neXus Youth entitled “Stories: A Glimpse of the Undeniable.”
This series is going address the fact that God moves in our lives right NOW and not just in the Bible and throughout history.
You see, the fact is that people like to argue over what happened, over what people believe, over what people learn in school, what people read on the internet about God, faith, Jesus and Christianity. But there just isn’t any way to argue with what we see and experience first-hand in our lives!
I love to hear people’s stories of God’s work in their lives. We need to take more time to share those stories with each other, it is so exciting! I am so excited that we are doing this series!
Another exciting part about this series is that I won’t be preaching it! I’m sure you get tired of seeing my mug up there every Friday night lol… We have some AWESOME guest speakers who are familiar faces to our ministry! THEY are going to share THEIR undeniable stories of how GOD moved in a mighty way in each of their lives… I am STOKED!
So for week 1, I was able to share an incredible story of how God moved in my life a few weeks ago as I was on a road trip in the states. We did it by video blog, so here is the link for you to check it out!
Also, here is an amazing hi-five video that we love….

Hey readers!
Sorry I have been absent from the blog world. To be honest, I have been fairly absent in the entire interwebs for the last little bit. I’ve only been logging on to check out my facebook and then back to work!
Let’s see what’s happened in the last 4 weeks or so:
1. Drove to Atlanta, GA for the AMAZING Drive Conference held at North Point Community Church, got to meet some amazing people!
2. Delivered 17,000 sets of phonebooks to raise money for our youth ministry’s annual budget (wow. that doesn’t do it justice. we were so tired we could barely eat afterward!)
3. Welcomed a new team member, Lindsay Giesbrecht to our staff team at Cross Church. I’ve always wanted an office manager, and Lindsay is the perfect fit for the job!
4. Had a Gleekover sleepover for our High School girls. I am still exhausted, and I went to bed at 3am, instead of 7:00 like some of the girls!
5. Getting geared up for summer. I have not worked these many hours in 4 consecutive weeks in my 3+ years of ministry here. This summer is going to be amazing. We still have some roadblocks and setbacks to overcome, but God is great, and has BIG BIG plans for our church and youth group!
So I promise, I will be blogging again soon! We have a LOT of work to get done around the office… let me just say that I am so stoked about the next 6 months or so!
See you this Friday at neXus youth for part 2 of Stories: A Glimpse of the Undeniable!

Hey all!
So you’ve probably noticed my absence here for a week or so… the reason for that is the DRIVE Conference in Atlanta, Georgia! It just wrapped up today and was an amazing time of learning and renewal for me. I have some miraculous stories that include a flood of epic proportions, a miracle taking place, and some celebrity sightings! Full disclosure… I did NOT meet Andy Stanley… however, I did see him driving his car out of the church parking lot. Not that I was there to meet all the megachurch celebrities. It’s just really cool when you get to say “hello” and thank them for the work that they do.
Anyway, it’s very late and I am getting up at 5am tomorrow morning for a two day drive back to Winnipeg. I will have to share bits and pieces with you as I update my blog regularly next week (Lord willing, those phonebooks will be delivered eventually!).
I also took a few opportunities to do some video blogging as the trip progressed, so once I get a chance, I will edit and post some of those as well.
If you’re in ministry, make sure you take time to refresh yourself a couple of times a year at a conference. Such a great way to get the vision converstaion started again… even if it’s just to remember why you do what you do in the first place

My best memory in youth ministry was _______________, because ________
April 14, 2010
Wow, I can’t believe it’s April already! That means that May is just around the corner, and that means only one thing around here: PHONEBOOKS!
Every year for the last 3 years, we’ve had the distinct pleasure of delivering phonebooks over in North Kildonan for 10 mad-paced days. Why do we torture ourselves so much every year? Two words: annual budget. If we do phonebooks, then we can run our ministry on a pretty tight budget without having to do garage sales, cookie bakes, sell chocolate bars or beg people for money. I read in the book “Sustainable Youth Ministry” by Mark DeVries that a successful ministry should budget about $1000 in their annual budget for every student that the ministry ministers to (including pastoral salaries). We are EXTREMELY underbudgeted according to that statement. But God is a big provider, and He can work miracles in our bank account if we pray and work hard to minister to the youth in this area. I so wish we could do much, much more in regards to raising funds, but if we spent the whole year fundraising, we wouldn’t have time or energy to minister!
anyway, if you’re a youth reading this, please plan to help us out! Youth ministry costs a lot of money to keep going, and this is one way we can help make sure we spend time focusing on ministry instead of money! I can’t wait to see you all on the back of the semi truck!

Hey youth! You neXus kids!
We are two weeks away from a life-chaning retreat at Camp Arnes. Have you handed in your registration form and money yet? Just remember that we are NOT accepting any registrations after MARCH 15- NO EXCEPTIONS. So if you want to come, get your form and money in!
Why am I so excited about this retreat? I’ll give you 10 reasons:
- Marc and Jenna Moir are joining us for the weekend!
- Kalandra Dueck is planning an AWESOME spa morning for the girls on Saturday
- We are talking all weekend about one of my favorite topics: sex!
- There is a pool and hot tub at Camp Arnes! YES!!!!
- Two words: Trust. Fall.
- Q&A session: we are devoting an ENTIRE EVENING SESSION to answer any questions you have about sex, dating, relationships, or whatever!
- Free time: I LOVE sitting, playing games, chatting and listening to the people who come with us… I feel like I’ve made 10 new friends by the end of the weekend… even if I already knew everyone, it just feels good!
- No parent weekend! I know.. I don’t live with my parents anymore, but it’s nice to get away from home, siblings, parents, chores and Winnipeg!
- Sleeping bags. I have an awesome yellow and black sleeping bag that kindof looks like a wasp… it’s even got little strings so I can tighten the top around my face
- The weather is looking like it’s going to be AWESOME for that weekend. Usually we head to Arnes in February, when it’s FREEZING outside… perhaps broomball won’t be such an extreme sport in milder weather!
So there you have it… what are your 10 reasons for being excited to go? Do you have your form in yet????

I have to admit, getting students involved is a difficult task for me. We have a few involved in canteen and worship ministry right now, but that’s about it. I have been trying to figure out a couple of other simple ways to get kids to feel as though they are part of the ministry that takes place on Friday nights. I think one of the biggest hurdles that I am trying to overcome is to get kids to show up consistently for duty. I’m not sure how much grace should be given for a missed week, a no-show, or even for showing up late.
Here are a few ideas I have to get students involved:
- Announcement videos
- Ushering
- Security
- Lead a game
- Skits
- Music
- Older youth leading small groups
- Emcee for the evening (yikes!)
- Powerpoint
- Sound
- Greeters at the door
- Attendance
- Cafe (duh!)
- Setup and teardown of video games
- Black mark cleaner uppers in the gymnasium
- Drink police (we don’t allow beverages on the carpet… we’ve had a few… accidents)
- General Clean-up
- Head Volunteer
Well… I think that’s 18 more jobs than I had a few minutes ago. Time to star making a plan to implement this!
Peace out!
